The Charlotte women’s soccer team shutout both teams they faced this weekend at Transamerica Field.
The Niners allowed ACC foe North Carolina State only one shot on goal as the Charlotte 49ers defeated the Wolfpack 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field. This was the Niners final non-conference game.
After a scoreless first half, junior Kirby Stenard scored her third goal of the season, at the fifty-two minute mark.
Stenard deflected a corner from Sam Huecker “sometimes that is all you need” said Stenard. This was Stenard’s second straight game-winning goal.
The match was physical throughout with the two teams combining for 17 penalties.
Head coach John Cullen welcomed the physicality.
“I think it helps us toughen up, and I think it also prepares us for conference play which will be rough and tumble games,” said coach Cullen.
The win against the Wolfpack capped off a great weekend for the Niners in front of the home crowd, as the Niners did not allow a goal in either game. On Friday evening, Charlotte shutout East Tennessee State, 4-0.
With the shutout, Brown recorded her fourth solo shutout and her 23rd career shutout. It was the team’s fifth shutout of the 2009 season.
“We had a very successful weekend. We did not concede a goal in either one of two games this weekend. I was pleased with our team’s defense today to limit a very good NC State team to no goals and only five shots is fantastic. I was pleased with our overall performance today. We did a good job of possessing the ball and controlling the play,” said coach Cullen.
Heading into the Sunday game at Transamerica Field, NC State was 5-1-1 and were able to get off only five shots against the Niners defense.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Brown and junior defenders Katie Davies, Danielle Mayeaux, Whitney Bryant, Megan Minnix, and senior Leah Zapone kept the Pack with only a single shot on the goal.
Huecker, who recorded the assist, led Charlotte with three shots on goal, Stenard, Macky Wingo, and senior midfielder Hailey Beam recorded two shots each.
Charlotte will begin Atlantic 10 play on Friday at Transamerica Field as the team hosts Duquesne with the first kick slated for 7 p.m. as the Niners look for their fourth straight regular-season conference crown.
