This past Sunday, the Niners began a game that would soon become a depressing sense of fall and rise, and proclaim no winner at the end of the match.
After double over time, Charlotte still struggled to defeat their Atlantic 10 foe, the Richmond Spiders. The score ended in a 0-0 tie, and the Niners walked away with a record of 1-0-1 in conference play, and 7-1-3 overall. This tie was however, beneficial to Richmond, who increased their record to 0-1-1 in conference.
That being said, the game was a bit of a dissapointment for the Niners, as they had been on a winning streak, even without starting junior forward, Andres Cueros. The attacking had changed, but still worked for them in the past couple of games. Charlotte defeated Wake Forest, Furman, and George Washington in three consecutive games prior to their tie against Richmond.
That being said, they also tied in games against UNC Greensboro and Clemson. Still, their only loss came at the beginning of the season, against South Carolina, in which they lost 3-1.
The Niners outshot the Spiders 18-11, but still could not finish through to score. Shooting attempts by Luke Exley, Adam Gross and Evan James were all on frame, but either hit the cross bar or the goalie’s hands. Gross and Jennings Rex created four shots on frame a piece to see if the Spiders’ goalie was worthy. But much like Niner goalie, Dave Martin, he was. Martin has not allowed a goal in three consecutive games. With the help of his team mates, Martin has created three game shutouts for the team and himself.
Out of luck and time, the Niners walked away with their third tie of the season. Still, the Niners remain in their unbeaten ten game streak, which will hopefully carry them past the Saint Louis Bilikens, on the road, this Saturday at 8 p.m.
