Charlotte 49ers senior all-America Corey Nagy carded three under-par rounds at the VCU Shootout to take home individual medalist honors. With a three-round total of -6, 210, Nagy and Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest were the only players in the 83-man field to finish under par.
The victory was the third of Nagy’s illustrious collegiate career. He also won the 2007-08 Scenic City Invitational and the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship. Nagy carded five birdies in the final round in route to his title-clinching 70.
As a team, Charlotte finished ninth in the 14-team field with a three-round total of +26, 890. UNC Wilmington won the team event at +8, 872, five strokes ahead of second place Virginia at +13, 877. Seven of the 14 teams in the field were ranked in Golfstat’s top 50.
The Seahawks were ranked 41st by Golfstat while the 49ers were ranked 26th. Other notable team finishers were 47th ranked Wake Forest in third place at +15, 879, and 18th ranked Iowa in fourth at +17, 881. In-state rival East Carolina, led by sophomore and local product Harold Varner (+1, 217) finished one shot behind Charlotte in the team competition.
Freshman Andy Sajevic shot a final-round of +3, 75 to finish the tournament at +15, 231 in a tie for 63rd. Sophomore Paul Ferrier had an impressive round one of -1, 71, but struggled in rounds two and three with back-to-back six-over par 78’s to finish at +11, 227 in a tie for 47th.
Sitting in 12th-place after two rounds, junior Will Golden and freshman Andy Sajevic both shot three-over par 75 in the final round to help Charlotte rally. Freshman Olafur Loftsson finished at +12, 228, two ahead of Golden (+14, 230) to round out the 49ers scorecard.
Senior Ryan Wilson, competing as an individual, finished in a tie for 37th with a three-round total of +8, 224.
Charlotte won’t tee it up again until the Brickyard Collegiate tournament on October 10 in Macon, Georgia.
