Niners hit the road for the 76 Classic

Charlotte opens the 76 Classic against arguably the best team in the tournament in Arizona State. The Sun Devils welcome back all five of their starters from last year’s 21-13 squad which saw an appearance in the NIT.

Women’s basketball team defeats UAB in home opener, 79-57

The Charlotte 49ers women’s basketball team (3-1) defeated the UAB Blazers (1-2), 79-57, in what marks its 27th meeting, eighth straight home opening win and a 22-point career-high game for junior guard Aysha Jones.

Niners’ Hubbard succeeds on and off the court

In the world of collegiate athletics, people often lose sight of the fact that the athletes on the court or field are also students with various and extraordinary academic goals. Their academic achievements are often overshadowing by their athletic events. Charlotte is no different, full of people who both exceed athletic and academic expectations.

    Behind everything great is a loyal fan base. That’s exactly what we have here at Charlotte. Niner Nation has been a driving force behind the 49er basketball team thus far. Despite another heartbreaking loss for the team Saturday to Clemson, I have never seen Niner Nation so faithful and so pumped about a game.

    Goetschius just third Niner ever to compete at NCAA Cross Country Championships

    Harsh winds blew across the campus of UNC Charlotte Tuesday, causing students to bundle up in layers of clothing as temperatures dipped into the low 30s. While many considered the weather downright dreadful, sophomore Amanda Goetschius didn’t seem to mind.

    Women’s basketball handles Hampton 69-46

    The Charlotte 49ers women’s basketball team defeated Hampton University out of Niner Nation territory, 69-46, with dominant scoring by 10 of the players, and a stellar performance from Shannon McCallum, leading the team with 15 points.

    Niners fall to Mountaineers by 3 points

    It was supposed to be a night where the Niners could mend their broken hearts from the Old Dominion loss.  Not that Coach Bobby Lutz or the Niners took their Wednesday night game at Appalachian State lightly, but on all accounts, Charlotte needed the win.

    It wasn’t pretty, but it didn’t have to be. Behind near-perfect free throw shooting and a defense that forced 23 turnovers, the Charlotte 49ers picked up their first win of the 2008-09 basketball season on Friday evening against the UNC Greensboro.

    Niners top Tennessee, fall to Chapel Hill in NCAA Tournement

    For just the second time in school history, the Charlotte women’s soccer team advanced past the first round of the women’s soccer NCAA Tournament. While the emphasis on scoring this year has come from underclassmen, the Niners relied on the experience of seniors Nikki Dumencich and Nikki Czaplicki as Charlotte topped the Volunteers of Tennessee 2-0.

    Before the 2008-09 basketball season even tipped off, women’s basketball coach Karen Aston was already revamping her squad for 2009-10. The second-year head coach announced on Wednesday that the Niners had signed three players to national letters of intent for 09-10.

    Women 9th, Men 12th at Southeast Regionals

    As if an Atlantic 10 individual title was not enough for her, Charlotte sophomore Amanda Goetschius ran the fastest race of her life over the weekend to place an impressive eighth at the Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships in Wake Forest.

    Women’s basketball splits opening weekend action at N.C. State

    The Charlotte 49ers women’s basketball team battled in a close win against University of Southern California, 62-60 and closed out the tournament in an unfortunate loss against ACC foe, NC State at the Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh, NC, Saturday.

    Women’s basketball opens season at NCSU Tourney

    Last season, the women’s basketball team finished the regular season 18-12 overall and 9-5 in the conference, earning a fourth seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament. Charlotte also landed a bid to the WNIT.

    Monday night seemed to be a formality for the Charlotte women’s soccer team. Sitting at the new Wild Wings Café on Mallard Creek Church Road near campus, the Niners enjoyed their dinner and talked amongst themselves while waiting for the official unveiling of the 2008 NCAA Women’s Soccer Bracket.

    Volleyball falls to George Washington and Fordham

    The Charlotte 49ers volleyball squad dropped two conference matches this weekend dropping it to 10-17 (1-10) with only two matches left of the season. The 49ers travelled to Washington D.C. Thursday to take on Atlantic 10 rival George Washington; however, Charlotte fell in its closest match this season (25-28, 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13).

    Niners cruise to second straight A-10 title

    Beam’s pair of goals put Charlotte back in NCAA Tournament

    In an encore performance from last year’s Atlantic 10 women’s soccer tournament, Charlotte junior Hailey Beam once again led the Niners to postseason glory. With outstanding play and scoring a pair of goals, the midfielder earned her second straight A-10 Championship Most Outstanding Player Award.

    Pair of losses shorten men’s soccer season

    This weekend, the Niners traveled to Rhode Island, where they fell 2-1 in a double overtime game. Andres Perdomo, assisted by Kedan Crosby, logged the first goal for Rhode Island in the 20th minute. Charlotte answered back 8 minutes later with a goal from freshman Evan James, assisted by Chris Salvaggione. The goal was James’ 6th of the season.

    Nothing but net

    Entering this fall, coach Jon Lipsitz had some concerns about his defense.  The fourth year women’s soccer coach noted that the offense had been able to cut through his young defense too many times during preseason training.

    Charlotte defeats Presbyterian in non-conference volleyball action

    Senior Courtney Cowles earns first career triple-double

    Behind senior setter Courtney Cowles’ first triple-double (43 assists, 13 digs, and 10 kills) since the 2005 conference switch, the 49ers were able to defeat Presbyterian (25-15, 20-25, 25-22, 27-25) in four sets Saturday afternoon in volleyball action inside Halton Arena.

    Dentamo, Goetschius, Atlantic 10 Champions

    Hosting their first ever Atlantic 10 Championship on the campus of UNC Charlotte, the Niners men’s and women’s cross country teams saw great team and individual results over the weekend.
