Monday, Sept. 28 held host to Sherry Wolf, author, lecturer and activist for the advancement of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, better known as LGBT. Her lecture Monday, entitled “Sexuality and Socialism: The Struggle for LGBT Liberation,” focused on her latest publication from Haymarket Books entitled “Sexuality and Socialism: History, Politics, and Theory of LGBT Liberation.”
Lecturing for just under an hour to a crowd of around twenty-five, Ms. Wolf presented a very riveting lecture and discussion session placing emphasis on her views of modern-day socialism through the eyes of an LGBT activist. Sponsored by UNC Charlotte’s International Socialist Organization, which led by student Greg Love, Ms. Wolf focused heavily on her three main reasons for writing her book: the construction of homosexuality within our modern culture, biological determinism in the attempts to find a “gay gene,” and the question of sexual liberation under the constraints of a “normal society.”
Over the past several weeks, Sherry Wolf has traveled to a myriad of college campuses not only to promote her latest work, but also to rally continual opposition to Proposition 8, a Californian ballot proposition passed in November 2008 banning same-sex marriage within the state of California. Using her latest work as a rallying point, Ms. Wolf spoke very highly of the advances made by the LGBT community within the past three months as they have organized a National Equality March on Washington scheduled for Oct. 10 and 11.
In speaking with Sherry Wolf following her lecture, Ms. Wolf wanted to express that, “This is the Civil Rights Movement of your generation,” and encouraged young people to “get the facts, read the book and go to the march.” Though the crowd was rather small for Monday’s 8 p.m. meeting, there was no lack of enthusiasm from the crowd; some coming from as far away as Greensboro to hear her presentation.
If you think you might be interested in getting involved with the National Equality March on Washington set for October 10 and 11, Ms. Wolf stressed that students should visit the group’s website at: http://www.nationalequalitymarch.org. In case you missed Monday’s lecture, not to worry, the International Socialist Organization here at UNC Charlotte will be hosting several information sessions leading up to the National Equality March and beyond.
