A workshop was held Tuesday in the Student Union entitled “Getting Involved 49er Style” and aimed at informing students on how to take advantage of the numerous resources available on campus.

The workshop was geared towards the freshman class and new transfer students, yet the information was useful to any UNC Charlotte student. The workshop began with an icebreaker game called “Two Truths and A Lie.”  The game invited everyone to get comfortable sharing in the group setting and called for each person to come up with a lie and two truths; the objective was to come up with a believable lie that no one would suspect.

The game was a good way to be involved in a small setting and it provided a good bridge into the rest of the workshop. Celine Chen, a LEAD member and the workshop coordinator, transitioned from the game to an interesting test that highlighted student strengths and gave insight to where on campus students could excel.

With six categories, ranging from a personality that is investigative to one that is conventional in nature, the interest test was a good tool to use to discover what would interest someone most on campus.  For example, a person with an enterprising personality would be business-minded, ambitious and competitive, and the test examined good clubs for those sorts of people to be involved in, such as the Student Government Association or the Campus Activity Board.

The focus of the workshop was to help participants learn to find their niche and be acquainted with the resources that will help them succeed during their collegiate careers.  Students should know that we have the Writing Resource Center, which will proofread papers, as well as the Career Center, which will provide mock interviews.

The informational workshop also explained how to fill out applications for campus jobs, how to have the perfect interview and even how to leave your job on a good note.  The behavioral interview during the workshop, in which students actually practiced using interview techniques, further helped participants in understanding the interview process.

Overall, the workshop was enlightening and provided good background information to all the organizations and resources available to students at UNC Charlotte.  Chen stressed three main points about getting involved at the conclusion of the workshop. According to Chen, getting involved builds leadership skills, improves time management and is rewarding.

So take advantage of the opportunities available on campus.  One can make the most of their time by giving back to the campus community and making the university work for them.
