Lil Wayne’s song “Always Strapped” inspired C.H.A.I.N Reaction, which is also known as Cultural Heritage Alliance Initiating the Needed Reaction, to produce the presentation about always being prepared and practicing safe sex, along with information about sexually transmitted diseases.
The presentation was part of Black History Month. The true meaning today is that people are not always “strapped,” or have a condom with them. Patrick Hope from Iota Phi Theta said during the presentation, “this is an event for people with open ears. We hear things over and over again, but we need to put it into action.
Leslie Dill from UNC Charlotte’s Student Health Center was one of the speakers. She explained to the audience ways of safe sex in addition to fun demonstrations using condoms.
For people that do not know the Student Health Center has HIV confidential screening, and a free screening during the second Tuesday of every month. In addition to the entertaining demonstrations, Youtube videos and slides were displayed to explain different sexually transmitted diseases and their symptoms. Recently, chlamydia has 4 million new cases every year; one out of every four men has the disease.
Some quick facts that were told during the power-point presentation were: that blacks account for 57 percent of deaths due to HIV. Blacks also account for 14 percent of the U.S. population and 46 percent of them are living with HIV. Also, black women account for the largest new HIV infections among women with 61 percent.
Not only were there free hand-outs of pamphlets, samples, and shirts, but there were humorous skits performed by willing audience members and fraternity brothers.
The skits showed realistic situations that college students might run into with being “strapped”. The first and second were skits showing people how they can tell their partner to wear a condom.
The last skit was when a friend goes to get tested and finds out they’re positive, and what to do next. “Sexual health and awareness is everyone’s responsibility. Keep it strapped – save lives,” stated president of C.H.A.I.N. Reaction, Genevieve Smith. If a student has a question, concern or want screening they are urged to go to our Student Health Center.
