Today marks the 33rd Great American Smokeout nationwide. Rich Miller, who has been smoke free for over three years, offered some helpful information for everyone. According to Miller, though the Great American Smokeout (GASO) “officially began in 1977, the event’s roots reach back to 1971.
Hip-hop came to school today, and hip-hop schooled UNC Charlotte students on entry into the music industry. It came in the form of six panelists informing through a formal Q&A session.
In a unanimous decision, members of the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees voted to approve a campus football program beginning in the year 2013. “The vote wasn’t a surprise for me, but I am very grateful for the Board’s support,” Chancellor Philip Dubois said.

On Sunday, November 16, residents of Phase III, or Smurf Village, were left without power for about 5 hours. Many tried to find alternatives to studying in a pitch-black room which ultimately led them to the library or the Student Computing Labs in Barnard.

An ocean of at least 300 supporters gathered in front of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center and like waves, they swayed their rainbow banners and American flags, chanting “Out of the closet, into the street.” In the mighty wind, sails of poster signs read “Yes we can”, “Marriage is about love,” and “Equal rights.”

Persian Cultural Program opens Middle Eastern traditions to campus
International Education Week kicked off this past weekend with the Fifth Biennial Persian Cultural Program, a sampling of Persian culture through music and poetry. The event drew people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds to Rowe Recital Hall.
Men’s basketball beats Pfeiffer in exhibition game
The Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team defeated the Pfeiffer Falcons, 122-85, in an exhibition game, showcasing a range of talent and what the team has in store for the 2008-2009 season. The 49ers kicked off their debut game in Halton Arena last Thursday with returning and new faces checking in this season.
The vote for an NCAA football program at UNC Charlotte is coming before the Board of Trustees on Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Tate room of the Harris Alumni Center. Beginning at 9:45 a.m., the Board’s announcement for whether it is for or against football will be given at approximately 11 a.m.
Crossroads Charlotte is a civic project whose presence on campus this past Tuesday was in response to an extremely disturbing statistic discovered recently. This statistic found that Charlotte places 39th out of 40 communities on the subject of interracial trust.
Had somebody suggested in September that by November a gallon of unleaded regular would go for $2.29, nobody would have believed it. Back then, gas was an average $3.97 in Charlotte and cars lined up for miles with their tanks on ‘E’ because of the shortage.
On Monday night, Nov. 10, the UNCC student organization SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) held its 5th annual Etiquette and Networking Dinner in the SAC Salons. The five course semi-formal dinner was held to bring executives from the Charlotte area and students together for a night of networking, while also giving them a crash course in dinner etiquette.
Today a new Web site targeted directly at college students, shmoop.com, is designed to help everyone burning the midnight oil. “Shmoop” is a Yiddish word that means “encouraging word.”
International Education Week begins Nov. 15
It’s going to be a jam-packed week for international enthusiasts. From Nov. 15-21, a multitude of events are being hosted at UNC Charlotte for International Education Week. Details for the celebration and its activities were clarified by Rebecca Vincent.
