Only a freshman on the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team, Jenna Litoborski not only starts, but she also leads the team with 149 kills this season.
Coming in to the season, Litoborski had not expected to start, or lead the squad with her attacking game. She credits her success in large part to summer open gym, and consistent practice with sophomore setter, Sheri Davis.
"It seems like there would be alot of pressure, but the girls are really supportive on and off the court." Litoborski said. "Our team is really close."
To prepare and ward off the stress such a high level of competition can bring, Litoborski says that she enjoys dancing, and reviewing the scouting reports of the opposing team before the game with the other girls, and grabbing a sandwich at Panera Bread.
Before she came to Charlotte, Litoborski used to play for a First Alliance club in Chicago, and says that having to balance school work and club volleyball during her high school career helped her prepare for her busy college schedule.
Playing for nearly ten years, Litoborski knew she was going to play volleyball on the collegiate level when schools began to show interest in her prep career. She had coaches from Wisconsin, Illinois, and North Carolina calling her.
Being from Chicago, you would almost assume that she would not run in to any of her friends in competitions in North Carolina. But Litoborski says that her old teammate is the starting libero for Elon. She said it was "cool" to get to see her.
Almost two-thirds of the way through the season, the freshman outside hitter claims her most memorable moment to be winning the Coastal Carolina tournament on September18. She feels her best game, however, was the game against High Point, in which she scored her first double-double. It was a close game, and could have gone either way, and she loved the excitement of it all.
This excitement is found in practice when she is scrimmaging her teammates. It is Litoborski's favorite part of practice, and she loves how competitive the games can be. She later states that that kind of excitement is the reason she continues to play volleyball.
Litoborski hopes to continue improving on the things that head coach Chris Redding tells her to work on. She wants to work on her personal list of goals, as well as her individual ones.
The team goal is to produce a winning record (which they successfully have now; 9-7 overall), and her individual goal is to become more aggressive, and work on her defensive game, which she feels is her weakest point.
She continues to follow and get game pointers from watching Misty May-Treanor, who she saw play at the ABC Tour in Chicago. She and her younger sister (also a volleyball player), have a picture with Treanor at the game.
Look for Litoborski and the rest of the Niners on Oct. 2 inside Halton Arena as they squad takes on the Fordham Rams in Charlotte’s “Dig Pink” match for Breast Cancer Awareness.
