Australia’s standards went down under

Being a Baz Luhrmann fan, I expected that his latest film, “Australia,” would completely sweep me off my feet. After maintaining a hopelessly romantic relationship with both “Romeo and Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge!,” the anticipation for this seven-year-long project couldn’t have been greater. Full story

Twilight dazzles at the box office

“Twilight” is an action-packed modern love story between two characters, uniquely different, yet who’ve come to love one another. In a way it is almost indescribable, yet it has been described by Stephanie Meyers. “Twilight” is based on the first novel of a four-part trilogy about a girl who falls in love with vampire.

  • Von Iva melts Milestone

A tour manager working for a San Francisco Bay area band called Von Iva contacted UNC Charlotte to alert us to the band’s upcoming performance at a small venue named Milestone.

Brandon Kirkley and the Firecrackers to play local show

After almost two years of dedication and motivation, an upcoming band, directly from UNC Charlotte, will soon be performing its most important concert to date. It’s been a struggling path for these students as they have to manage their schedule between classes and rock show performances.

Secondhand Serenade and Cute is What We Aim For talk tour

University Times’ own Stefanie Field sits down with the up-and-comers

The atmosphere was beyond intense. It was amazing. Girls upon lovers’ shoulders. Fans screaming, swooning, crowd surfing. Four bands back-to-back on a November night. What a way to spend a Saturday evening.

  • There’s a “hell” of a lot of extras

One of the best action movies of the summer is now available on DVD. “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” picks up where the first film left off. Liz (Selma Blair) and Hellboy (Ron Perlman) are still adjusting to their budding relationship and the red guy still can’t keep his face out of the public eye, or off YouTube.

  • Horror movies are more than a checklist of events

There is a list of certain actions, events and scenarios every horror or suspense movie has to play out. Items on this checklist include people willingly walking into a creepy setting, a dark ultimate evil being, and two survivors. However, there needs to be more to the story than this checklist.

Gregory and the Hawk trades in boats and birds for new sound

Gregory and the Hawk’s reputation precedes it.  Fronted by Meredith Godreau, the group’s debut CD, “Moenie and Kitchi,” on FatCat records, marks Godreau’s transition into full production and accompaniment.

Tom Gäbel can’t escape Against Me!

Tom Gäbel is more punk rock than a tartan safety pin. The Against Me! front man has been performing since he was 16 years old. His latest solo project is as gritty and raw as ever, but with a poppy electronic tinge.

It’s a matter of personal style, taste

Adjusting your style to fit who you are

With all the new trends floating about the runways this season, it is very easy for someone to get scooped up and carried away. It is OK to be up on your latest styles and fashionable, but there is one thing that I see a lot of – the attack of the trend monster.

    Lysistrata, play review

Lysistrata by Aristophanes, a Greek comedy, was performed by UNC Charlotte Department of Theatre in Anne R. Belk Theater at Robinson Hall, from Oct. 29- Nov. 2. The time period was adapted to the 1950s, which was a good directorial decision by Laura Standley.  This setting gave the audience more of a connection and relation to that time.

One woman fights corruption in search of lost child in “Changeling”

It’s every parent’s worst fear to leave his or her child in the morning for work and come home to find him missing. That is exactly what happens to single mother Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie) when her nine-year-old son, Walter (Gattlin Griffith) disappears in director Clint Eastwood’s latest film, “Changeling.”

This film has no pride, there will be no glory

Good cop movies are few and far between in Hollywood. There is always too much violence, not enough plot, too many macho men with guns – and so on. Then there’s just the straight-out bad movie.

Staying stylish for the conscientious male

Whether you are preppy, edgy, rugged, conservative, or my personal favorite, metro; all you men have style quarrels that you must deal with just like us women. Here are a few ideas to appease whatever end of the fashion spectrum you may be at.

  • Yamagata’s new album gives Elephants grace

Rachael Yamagata’s new album, “Elephants ... Teeth Sinking Into Heart,” might raise some eyebrows with just its title, but it fits it perfectly. While the majority of the tracks are soft and mellow, she’ll shake you to the core and tear at your heartstrings.

Andy Friedman: becoming a new folk-rock favorite

“Andy Friedman and The Other Failures” should remind you of a long dirt road leading down to an old country farm. Although many folks do not recognize the band, Andy Friedman’s music provides for a short period of reminiscence of the simple times in life.

    The sound of breaking glass

The first chord chimes like a bell, and Andrew McMahon lets you know that for the past year he has stared into the face of death. Leukemia has broken McMahon in two. His voice claws at the notes from the piano clinging to them as if mirroring his struggle.

  • “The Secret Life of Bees” is sweet

Few would believe three popular music stars and an up-and-coming young star could feature in a film that opens one’s eyes to the world of  possibilities. “The Secret Life of Bees” is a story of hope, racism, feminism and the plight of many during the times of the civil rights’ movement.

Sex Drive drives it home for teen movies

“Sex Drive” is a thrill of a ride that promises to make you laugh until you’re sore. It is rated R, and for good reason: it may not be for those who have an aversion to a crude sense of humor.
